For hot pot and shared meals, do not calculate the entire table and divide it by the number of people. Record the food that reached your own bowl or plate: roughly how much meat you took, whether you ate a staple, and how much dipping sauce and drink you had. A table photo shows what was ordered, not which bites belonged to you.
With nosh, photograph your own bowl or small plate, then adjust the portion to what you ate. Without a photo, add a rough text or voice entry such as “about one plate of beef, four fish balls, half a bowl of noodles.” The main goal is not to count every leaf. It is to avoid treating the whole table as your intake.
A table photo answers “What was served?”—not “What did I eat?”
Six people sit around a pot with two plates of sliced beef, shrimp paste, and several vegetable dishes. A before photo clearly shows the order, but it cannot tell who skipped the shrimp paste, who took another round of beef, or whether everything placed in the pot was eventually eaten.
The number of diners is not a reliable denominator. One person focuses on meat, another eats mostly vegetables, someone arrives late, and the person who ordered may barely eat. Dividing the table evenly looks fair but can move the estimate farther from individual intake.
Use the full-table photo as a list of dishes. Build your personal log around your bowl, small plate, and counts you actually remember.
Give food a brief place to pause
If you want a rough sense of your portion, do not log every bite. Let food land in your bowl or side plate first. It becomes a small transfer point: four slices of beef, two fish balls, and some lettuce now have a personal boundary.
You do not need a photo of every round. You might capture your empty bowl and utensils for scale at the beginning, then photograph one round when it contains a representative mix. Near the end, summarize with natural units you can remember. Use half a plate, one plate, or about ten slices for meat; count fish balls individually; use half a bowl or a small serving for staples. These are more honest than forcing the meal into 137 grams.
Plate sizes differ, so “one plate” is not standardized. Without a scale, a consistent unit you understand is still more useful than dividing the full table.
What hot pot misses most often may never enter the strainer
Broth, dipping sauce, drinks, and noodles added at the end easily disappear from memory. They are also difficult to infer from the table photo.
Vegetables cooked in clear broth and tofu products saturated with chili oil may look similar in the bowl. A dry spice dip and sesame sauce have very different ingredients. A photo can show that sauce exists, but not how heavily you dipped or whether you refilled it. Only you know whether you drank the broth or how much oil remained.
There is no need to calculate grams for every dip. Add the details that change the picture: “used about half a bowl of sesame sauce,” “did not drink the broth,” or “finished half a serving of noodles.” That makes the record much more complete.
Use the same rule for any shared dishes: find your personal boundary
Without a small plate, recall what you took. Larger, countable foods are easiest: two ribs, three shrimp, or one small bowl of fried rice. Describe vegetables, tofu, and mixed stir-fries as half a bowl, a small plate, or a few chopstickfuls instead of reconstructing ingredient weights.
When dishes are served with shared utensils, your small plate becomes especially useful. Photographing it is closer to personal intake than photographing a whole fish that everyone keeps taking from. If you sampled one bite, do not record a full serving simply because the entire dish appears in the image.
