A scale measures weight, not the entire meal

Place a bowl of rice on a scale, subtract the bowl, and you may get 186 grams: a physical measurement. Put tomato and scrambled egg on the scale and it reports the total weight, not the separate amounts of egg, tomato, oil, and sugar.

Weight is not calories. One hundred grams of cucumber, rice, and nuts contain very different amounts of energy. To connect grams with nutrition, you must still know the food, whether the weight is raw or cooked, and which matching data to use.

A scale answers one question precisely. It does not automatically answer all of them.

A photo preserves context, not a measurement

One photo can show rice, a chicken leg, vegetables, the takeout box, and a drink without weighing each item. That low burden matters for takeout, cafeteria meals, and dining with friends: capture the whole meal and continue eating within seconds.

The tradeoff is that portions come from visual inference. Distance, angle, deep bowls, stacking, and obstruction all affect the result. Oil, sugar, sauces, and fillings may be invisible. The image preserves the shape of the meal, not the true gram weight of every food.

The value of a photo is not pretending to be a scale. It preserves more life context with far fewer actions.

When eating out, a photo is usually more realistic

Few people weigh each item in a cafeteria tray, takeout rice bowl, or shared dinner. A photo estimate can preserve the staple, main dishes, and rough portions, followed by corrections for clear mistakes or omissions.

If AI estimates half a bowl of rice as a full bowl, correct it. Without a scale, there is no need to repeatedly debate whether it was 173 or 188 grams.

In this setting, a method you can continue using is often more helpful than one laboratory-like measurement you make occasionally.

When cooking at home, use a scale when precision matters

A food scale is easier to use in your own kitchen. To understand a recipe, weigh the main ingredients and cooking oil, then allocate the result by the amount you actually ate. For packaged food, prioritize net weight and nutrition facts rather than asking a photo to guess information already printed.

You do not need to weigh every leaf forever. Focus on items that change the result and are easy to misjudge, such as rice, nuts, oil, and energy-dense sauces. Whether vegetables and broth need equal precision depends on your goal.

Weighing is not more virtuous, and photography is not lazy. Choose based on how precise the decision needs to be.

A practical way to combine both
