Consistency includes at least three things

Second, use a similar approach to portions. Recording “half a bowl” and “one bowl” with the same household bowl can show change over time. Using cooked rice weight today and raw rice weight tomorrow may look more detailed, but it breaks the comparison.

Third, handle leftovers in a similar way. Record the amount actually eaten each time rather than sometimes logging the full serving and sometimes logging only what remains on the plate.

Consistency is not mechanical uniformity. It makes the same number mean roughly the same thing on different dates.

Do not preserve an obvious error for the sake of consistency

If fried chicken is identified as poached chicken breast, or half a bowl of rice becomes two bowls, repeating the result only creates a stable bias. A package label, food scale, matching restaurant data, or a recipe you know should also take priority over a photo-based guess.

Use a simple correction order: fix the food identity first, correct large portion errors second, and then use any genuinely direct data you have. If no one measured whether a home-cooked dish used twelve or fifteen grams of oil, repeated adjustments will not make the answer more real.

The goal is not equal precision in every field. It is greater reliability in the information that matters, while keeping the unknown parts labeled as estimates.

When must accuracy come first?

When following a plan from a doctor or qualified nutrition professional, calculating a specific nutrient, managing a condition-related diet, or conducting formal research, the content, units, and frequency of the log should follow the professional requirements. Taking similar photos every day cannot replace measured weights, package data, recipes, or required tools.

Everyday goals are usually less strict. To see whether you often skip breakfast, whether weekday lunches include vegetables, or how many times milk tea appears in a week, a stable record is a better match than pursuing absolute precision for every meal.

Ask what the log needs to answer before deciding how precise it should be.

Build a comparable baseline in nosh
